“Anchorman 2″ just inched one meeting closer to becoming a reality. Somewhere in the mix of appearing on the 2009 MTV Movie Awards, promoting next week’s summer comedy “Land of the Lost” on “Behind the Screen”, and getting ready for the release of his next film, “The Goods,” Will Ferrell managed to wedge in a meeting with the creative minds behind 2004’s “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.” Re-assembling the film’s all-star news team, which included Ferrell, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, and Christina Applegate, probably won’t be easy, but the gears sound like they are finally in motion.

Ferrell told an Australian radio DJs Jono & Dano that he’ll be meeting with “all the guys” from the first “Anchorman” next week to “figure out when and how” to map out the sequel, according to a report on JoBlo.com.

Exactly what that sequel would involve, plot-wise, is likely another item on the table for the planned meeting. Writer/director Adam McKay, who also worked with Ferrell on “The Goods,” will probably have something to say there, though story plans may end up hinging on which cast members would be available and affordable for the project.

The 70s-era shtick of the first “Anchorman” was brilliant, turning gender integration in the newsroom into a hilariously thoughtful farce. There’s plenty more hilarity to be harvested from the the evolution of TV news reporting since that time period. Take one of the weirdest phenomenons occurring now: cable news programs on FOX News and MSBC trying to imitate “The Daily Show”/”The Colbert Report” style of comedic delivery, often with uncomfortably unfunny results. There’s a really great meta-comedy just waiting to be made there for sure. There’s also the whole issue of old school newsrooms attempting to report for an Internet-connected audience. Surely the Web-savvy team behind FunnyOrDie.com would have plenty to milk from that concept.

One Response to “Possible “Anchorman” Sequel?”

I loved the first film but I do not see enough there to warrant a sequel. What is it about Hollywood and rehashing old ideas rather than coming up with new ones? I’d love to see this group of actors getting into something different, sort of like “A Fish Called Wanda” or “Waiting for Guffman” branching out into different stories all involving basically the same cast. This is much more enjoyable for fans who love seeing actors playing opposite one another but who get tired of seeing the same roles reprised again and again. I think deep down the actors feel the same, wanting a challenge here and there yet staying with a group they enjoy working with.

I don’t think anyone from Anchorman needs to worry about becoming typecast. That talented bunch has certainly shown their versatility. Each has done something on his/her own within the past year or two, and in every case i can think of, succeeded in leading roles. Just saying that as a fan I’m a little sick of everything being a remake, prequel, sequel, etc. I’d dislike seeing this film to go the route of movies like “Blues Brothers 2000” where all the best material went into the original and the sequel plot was nothing more than a small plate of leftovers.
