Christina Applegate has lived nearly her entire life in the spotlight. She first gained fame playing the onscreen daughter of Ed O’Neill and Katey Sagal on the beloved 1980s sitcom Married…With Children; she was 16 when the show premiered. Though she’s been in countless television shows and films since (Friends, Anchorman, the Broadway revival of Sweet Charity), the actress has kept many of her life’s moments to herself — until now. Applegate will publish her first memoir in March 2026, The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively announce.

You With the Sad Eyes will cover Applegate’s life and legacy, starting with her tumultuous childhood in Laurel Canyon in the ’70s, her earliest years on set and the struggles (abuse, body dysmorphia and more) that plagued her meteoric rise.

“I decided to write this book when I was forced to slow down,” says Applegate. “I’ve had a career in TV and film since I was 3 years old, and I loved it. But with MS, all the things I thought were important shifted. For a long time, it felt impossible to find the meaning in everything I’ve been through, but for the first time in my life I’ve been able to stop and reflect. I’ve packed a lot into these 50-something years. It’s scary — not gonna lie — to finally decide to tell it all. But no matter how dark it gets, I wrote this because I truly believe that books can make people feel less alone. I promise, You With the Sad Eyes won’t be some big violin scratching for my life. But it will be real. It will be filled with the ups and downs, the humor and grief of life. So here I am. Real me. Lots to say.”

The memoir was acquired from CAA by Little, Brown and Company in a preempt for World Rights and will be edited by Executive Editor Bryn Clark. “As an editor, I’m always chasing the elusive feeling of ‘I have to have this.’ You only know it when you see it, and I knew Christina’s book was it the second I read her opening words,” says Clark. “Christina speaks to the power of embracing the messiness and temporality of life instead of hiding behind the plastic veneer of our modern world. We have no time to waste on falsehoods and perfection.”

Applegate follows the story of her earlier years with her health journey, and coming to terms with the repercussions of her 2021 multiple sclerosis diagnosis; searching for her identity and her joy in the face of the loss of her ability to act. Little, Brown and Company, a division of Hachette Book Group, will publish the memoir. Applegate is repped by CAA and Entertainment 360.

Christina Applegate is ready to put pen to paper!

Applegate, 52, revealed that she’s working on a memoir while chatting with her Anchorman costar, Will Ferrell, on the Tuesday, July 9 episode of her and Jamie-Lynn Sigler’s MeSsy podcast. July 9 is the 20th anniversary of Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.

The Dead to Me star made the surprise reveal as Ferrell, 56, discussed his beloved 2000 Saturday Night Live sketch “More Cowbell,” which featured the likes of Christopher Walken and Jimmy Fallon.

“I’ve watched Saturday Night Live since I was little, which I probably shouldn’t have been watching, but I was raised by Nancy [Priddy],” she said before taking a pause and saying with a slight chuckle, “It’s gonna be in the book.”

After Ferrell advised her to “wait for the book,” Applegate added, “Oh yeah, no, I’m writing it right now.” and went on to praise the SNL skit.

“I just think like, I don’t think there are many, I could name like five sketches that have, like, made me crack up over and over and over again,” she told Ferrell. “And I’d say out of those, you’re in most of them, obviously. And like Cowbell and the cheerleaders, I mean, I can’t, I can’t.”

The news comes as no surprise as Applegate, who revealed she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in August 2021, previously opened up to PEOPLE about how discussing her life journey has been therapeutic for her.

“We have each other, and that’s helped us so much. We would talk on the phone for two hours, and we’d be laughing and crying and we were like, ‘This is helping us. Let’s record this. Let’s do it,'” she said about her podcast in March.

Sigler, 43, who is also living with MS, echoed similar sentiments, telling PEOPLE that the podcast has allowed them to figure out “how to still push through.”

“The way that Christina disarms me and allows me to talk about the hard stuff I needed desperately,” she added.

When Christina Applegate walked the red carpet at the Screen Actor Guild Awards in February, she sent a strong message to her 2021 MS diagnosis: “FU MS” read the letters on her cane.

That symbol of defiance in the face of multiple sclerosis has inspired a new collaboration between the actress, 51, and Neo Walk, the UK walking stick company that custom designed her SAG cane.

The special edition cane (“FU MS” is written on a removable tag; a removable metal collar can be personalized with any message) is now available at neo-walk.com for £120 (about $150), with 5% of the profits going to the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America and the UK’s MS Society.

Applegate first learned of Neo Walk — founded by Lyndsay Watterson, who is an amputee — from her friend Selma Blair, who also lives with MS. “I saw Selma’s canes and fell in love with them,” Applegate says. “If I need to have a mobility aid, I might as well have a cool one. Lyndsay and I became friends and we decided to create one together that benefits the community.”

The collaboration, a clear acrylic cane which features a black DNA strand weaving through the center (which “symbolizes the invisible differences people have with chronic illness,” Watterson says), is one of the few projects Applegate has taken on recently.

After wrapping her Netflix series Dead to Me late last year, the actress has said she decided to step away from acting to deal with the effects of her MS, telling the Los Angeles Times earlier this year that her SAG award appearance was “my last awards show as an actor probably, so it’s kind of a big deal. Right now, I couldn’t imagine getting up at 5 a.m. and spending 12 to 14 hours on a set; I don’t have that in me at this moment.”

Instead, Applegate, who has been raw and open about the struggles she’s endured with the illness, is prioritizing her health, a friend tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “Christina needs to focus on herself right now,” the friend says. “What she chooses to share with the public is very real and in her own time, but her energy and focus right now needs to be on taking care of herself and her family as she learns how to live with MS. MS affects everyone differently so she needs to tune into what works for her and what triggers her flare ups.”

But, the friend adds: “Christina is one of the strongest people I know and also one of the most caring and generous, so it doesn’t surprise me at all that she took time to collaborate and create a design that reflects her attitude and will also benefit others.”

As for now, FOX is slated to air the 75th Primetime Emmys on Monday, September 18, produced by Jesse Collins Entertainment. But as Variety reported on Monday, the WGA strike and potential SAG-AFTRA strike will likely push the telecast to either November (the TV Academy’s choice) or January (when Fox would like to air it). A host has not yet been named.
